Helping Hands Free Clinic
is applying for a grant to help clients with their taxes
and will need 20 tax counselors.

Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center.

BE A JUDGE FOR THE INVENTION CONVENTION
I hope you are doing well as we conclude 2009. While you look at your 2010 calendar, please consider volunteering to be a judge for the Columbus City Schools' Invention Convention. This year the Invention Convention will take place at the Aladdin Shrine Center on Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Elementary and middle school students will be participating in this academic competition. Last year, we had 38 elementary and five middle schools send a total of 232 young inventors to the CCS Invention Convention. Winners from the CCS Invention Convention advance to the regional Invention Convention at COSI in May. Because so many students and schools are involved in this competition, we need qualified judges. I hope you are interested and willing to volunteer your time to judge inventions on March 24th. The judging will start at 9:30 am and conclude at 11:45 am. I will send out more detailed information about three weeks before the event. If you or any one you know would like to volunteer for this wonderful event, please e-mail me. Many of our current Docents are former teachers and we thought this would be a great opportunity to share with those who would like to be part of the museum and active with the community. JA needs you to return to the classroom!
JA lessons focus on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, and you're needed to teach 5 lessons (45 minutes each) to elementary students in the Columbus City Schools and the Southwestern City Schools. You will receive one-hour training, lesson guide, and all materials to conduct the activities. All lessons are fun, hands-on, activity based, and easy to use. The classroom teacher will remain in the class with you. There was a pilot program conducted last school year to teach financial literature to the students at Lindbergh Elementary on the west side of Columbus.
Grades 1-5. 5 weeks. Teach 1 hour a week. April-May . Classroom teacher will remain in the class. Volunteer teacher will be given a $500 packet of materials to teach the economic lessons.
The National Retired Teachers received a $600,000 grant from Hartford Insurance to stimulate financial development in elementary age students. Junior Achievement will be granted $500 upon your completion of volunteering.

The Community Development for All People is a non-profit outreach organization working on the Columbus Southside. Through their Circle of Hope program neighborhood residents can earn supplemental income for their families. They are making simple polymer clay jewelry, which is sold through various outlets. They meet Tues. and Thurs. 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.
They are looking for volunteers to help with the jewelry making. Volunteers can have an interest in arts and crafts or simply willing to contribute their time to a worthwhile effort.

We learned of the opportunity to volunteer for the many services offered by LifeCare Alliance. It's a huge operation dedicated to keeping older adults independent in their own homes. 4,000 meals for their "Meals-on-Wheels" are prepared daily.
Other programs: Home Care Support for cancer patients; Help-at-Home Program for homebound individuals; Senior Dining Centers; Child, School, and Day Care Meals; the Catch- the-Wellness Spirit Program, the Visiting Pharmacist, Visiting Dietitian and Nurse Practitioner Programs; and more to "nourish the human spirit."

Greet and Tour
The Statehouse Education & Visitors Center is seeking people who have a gift of graciousness, diplomatic, like to walk and can pass a security check to be part of the talented Statehouse Volunteer Corps. Statehouse volunteers greet children and adults from throughout Ohio and the world and take groups of up to 40 people on 45-minute tours of the Statehouse. Volunteers may be asked to portray a character in Ohio or Statehouse history, dress in period clothing on certain days, or be asked to greet and accompany special visitors or groups of visitors.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are also needed to help in the Statehouse Museum Shop. You may assist with customers, inventory, gift wrapping, product displays, and seasonal decorating
Temporary Volunteers
If you are looking for a temporary opportunity, volunteers are needed for the holiday season, in the Statehouse Museum Shop and for Victorian Holiday tours. Volunteers needed from November 15 thru December 30.

Departments Building, and restored seven decades later, the Ohio Judicial
Center stands as a monument to the history, culture, and commerce of Ohio.
Members of CEA-R toured this facility in January 2005.
The 16-story building, anchored on the east bank of the
Scioto River, is the new home of the Ohio Supreme Court. The art and
architecture are integrated to create a building that is functional and depicts
Ohio history. The inscriptions and symbols carved in marble and bronze,
and the muscular and mystic murals splashed across walls and ceilings, celebrate
all who shaped the state: presidents, jurists, the native peoples,
explorers, soldiers and artists.
